LA28 Business Opportunities: What Southern California Organizations Can Learn from America250, the FIFA World Cup, and Super Bowl LXI

Southern California is in the middle of one of the most significant event cycles in its history.

Just days after the United States commemorated its 250th anniversary, the FIFA World Cup has entered the quarterfinal stage. Communities across the region are reflecting on the economic activity, international visitors, and operational lessons from hosting one of the world's largest sporting events. Looking ahead, attention will soon shift to Super Bowl LXI in February 2027 and, ultimately, the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

These are not isolated milestones. They represent a unique opportunity for businesses, nonprofits, civic organizations, hospitality providers, venues, and community leaders to learn, adapt, and prepare for the years ahead.

The organizations that begin preparing today will be best positioned to benefit tomorrow.

America250: Looking Back at a Historic Celebration

The United States recently celebrated the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Across the country, communities hosted commemorative events celebrating American history, service, innovation, and civic pride. One of the most memorable celebrations took place in New York Harbor, where tall ships and naval vessels from around the world participated in an international maritime gathering.

While America250 was not a sporting event, it demonstrated something important: large-scale celebrations bring people together through shared experiences, tourism, storytelling, volunteerism, and community engagement.

Successful organizations understand that these moments create opportunities to strengthen partnerships, welcome visitors, and showcase their communities.

FIFA World Cup: Lessons from the Quarterfinal Stage

As the FIFA World Cup reaches the quarterfinals, Southern California has already experienced the impact of welcoming visitors from around the globe.

While spending time in Avalon on Catalina Island during the tournament, I was struck by the number of international visitors exploring the island between matches. Although the games were taking place in Los Angeles, the economic activity extended well beyond the stadiums. Restaurants, hotels, marinas, transportation providers, retailers, and local attractions all became part of the visitor experience.

That observation reinforced an important lesson: major events create regional opportunities, not just host-city opportunities.

For organizations across Southern California, FIFA has raised important questions:

Did visitors discover your organization?

Were your marketing materials ready for an international audience?

Did your partnerships help expand your visibility?

Were you positioned to benefit from increased tourism?

What lessons can you apply before the next major event?

Looking Ahead to Super Bowl LXI

In February 2027, SoFi Stadium will once again welcome the world as host of Super Bowl LXI.

For many organizations, the Super Bowl represents another opportunity to evaluate readiness before LA28. Corporate hospitality, sponsorship activation, transportation, entertainment, volunteer coordination, communications, and guest experience will once again become priorities across the region.

Organizations should begin asking themselves now:

Can we clearly communicate our value?

Is our website current?

Are our partnerships aligned with our goals?

Are we visible within our community and industry?

Are we prepared to respond when opportunities emerge?

Preparing Today for LA28

The LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games represent much more than a two-week sporting event.

They represent years of planning, procurement, workforce development, tourism, community engagement, sponsorships, infrastructure, and economic investment.

Organizations that begin preparing today will have more time to build relationships, strengthen operations, refine their messaging, and identify opportunities to contribute.

Preparation may include:

Strategic partnership development

Business development planning

Community engagement initiatives

Marketing and brand positioning

Operational readiness

Website and digital presence improvements

Capability statements and proposal development

Stakeholder collaboration

My Perspective

Over the past several months, I have attended LA28 update meetings, spoken with yacht clubs and community organizations, participated in conversations about athlete housing, and observed firsthand how organizations across Southern California are beginning to think about the opportunities ahead.

The common theme is clear. Organizations are excited about what is coming, but many are still trying to determine where they fit and how they can participate.

The next few years will reward organizations that build relationships early, communicate their value clearly, and remain engaged within their communities.
